Retro Wetsuits

If you’ve been out in the water with any high school kids lately, you’ll notice that many of them have been wearing retro wetsuits. This is especially true if you surf San Onofre—there is a whole group of kids who dress and surf like they’re living in the Sixties. Many of them even drive old cars. So, to the point: they wear retro looking wetsuits, beaver tails and all; I’ve always wondered why in the world they’d do that. Today’s wetsuits are so comfortable—stretchy and warm—why would you forsake that just for style?

So, the other night the family and I were in Laguna and we wandered into the Thalia Street Surf Shop, and what were they selling? The retro suits. There were two brands that were carried: O’Neill and a brand I had never heard of, Gato Heroi. Intrigued, I came home and did some research. If you go on Thalia’s website, they say that the O’Neill wetsuits are today’s technology but with yesterday’s look. So now I understand why these kids can stand to wear them—at least they are warm and comfy. As for Gato Heroi, I went on their site, and I get the impression that they make their products specifically for groups of kids like the aforementioned. Although they say they are based in Costa Mesa,CA, I get the feeling that they are originally from Japan, or maybe they’re just grabbing the Japanese style.

Anywho, next time you’re at the beach, take a look around and see if you see any of these “cats” for yourself—maybe you’ll be intrigued as I was.

No matter what the brand of a suit, the quality does matter. It is for our own safety.
