Boards for Girls

In this week’s Girls Learn to Ride email blast, there was mention of Skelanimals and Cool Girls Decks joining up to do some Skelanimals skate decks. As I was reading through it, I started to wonder why there aren’t more girl specific skateboard lines. Is it because a deck is just a deck? Do the big hardgood companies figure it’s enough to tailor to the girl’s market by producing girl specific graphics? It’s the same with surfboards—there are only a handful of surfboard shapers that shape specific girls lines—Surf Diva carries their own boards, and Trixie surfboards, shaped by Shawn Ambrose is another one. Why is this? Is the market too small? Or is there really no need? Dimensions are dimensions; does a girl just need to find the right ones for her? According to what Shawn says on his website, it’s not the same, “If a girl comes to me and says she is 5’7”, 130 pounds, and not a super strong paddler, you can bet I won’t make her the same board I’d make for a guy of the same height and weight.” I would have to agree, but going back to skateboards, does it make a difference?

Hey Frank, I just checked out the video--congrats, that's awesome. Best of luck to Cool Girls future, and I hope that day where you'll be delivering pallets of boards comes soon.

Nice work Frank.

It's funny, at a recent show I met with a reporter from a major news organization who didn't get the word-of-mouth marketing that thrives in action sports.

We've had it since day one, but lots of mainstream brands a just catching on.
